PRESENTATION: COMMUNITY BUILDING AND NEW FORMS OF URBAN HOUSING IN COPENHAGEN

New forms of housing are gaining ground in Copenhagen. New co-housing communities and intergenerational houses are emerging in newly developed neighborhoods such as UN17 Village and Eco Village, and many property developers are experimenting with alternative housing concepts. What do these alternative developments represent?

Many housing communities, as well as homeowner associations, are also exploring shared economy models, small living, and circular living, encouraging residents to adopt sustainable lifestyles. Increasingly, especially in cities, people are seeking sustainable housing solutions that minimize environmental impact while allowing for a meaningful, sustainable way of life.

It is no longer a status symbol to have two Volvos in the garage, a tractor lawnmower for a tiny garden, and a circular saw in the basement for the house’s single gate. Instead, environmental consciousness has become a form of status: using electric shared cars, shared bike workshops, and communal gardens, and teaching our children how to share and reuse.

Changes in lifestyle, the climate crisis, skyrocketing housing prices, and urban ecological awareness are prompting us to rethink our housing needs and explore alternative housing forms.

This lecture will use a series of cases—such as UN17 Village, Eco Village, ALMENR, and 8Tallet—to illustrate new housing models in Copenhagen and its surroundings and discuss what they represent.
